BFPA attends BSI Standards Forum and Awards 2018
30 Jan 2019
The BFPA were very pleased to be represented at this year’s BSI Standards Forum and Awards event held on 29th November at the Park Plaza Hotel, London, by Yvonne Pearman, Standards Project Manager and Jerry Hughes, Director of consultancy company, Jemlyn Limited. Jerry is also Chairman of BSI Committee MCE/18 (BFPA Technical and Standards Policy Committee).
The BFPA, as an external secretariat, looks after all fluid power standards work on behalf of the British Standards Institution (BSI) with responsibility for over 500 standards.
The BSI Standards Awards are the most prestigious awards BSI gives to standards-makers, created to recognise outstanding contributions by emerging standards- makers, industry leaders, consumer champions, international standards-makers and committee chairs and secretaries. In addition, with the special Wolfe Barry Medal, BSI recognises exceptional commitment and contribution to standards making by an individual. Through their services, BSI Standards Awards nominees are helping their sectors to develop and grow and helping to safeguard consumers. Their nomination for an award is a form of recognition and appreciation in and of itself, so we thought you would be interested to learn of it.
In the International Standards Maker category, retired Chairman of Contamination Control Committee, (BSI MCE 18/6 – BFPA/TC 6) Mike Day, was one of the nominees. Unfortunately, he was not one of the winners.
The event held a number of breakout sessions, the most useful of which was ‘Growing and Engaging the Standards-makers Community’. The purpose of this was to share ideas of how we could engage the wider community in getting actively involved in the world of standards making. The audience were asking the BSI to become more engaged with industry in showing the benefits of standards to the industry.
To this end, Yvonne is planning to visit some of the BFPA members to explain the many ways and advantages of becoming involved through the BFPA.
It was particularly fitting that BSI used the occasion to announce that they had, largely through the efforts of Dr Scott Steedman (Director of Standards), secured membership of CEN and CENELEC, assuring the UK’s position to continue to influence European Standardisation post BREXIT.
A worthwhile event, which is at the heart of the BFPA, namely the technical work of our Trade Association.
