Quarterly Trend Surveys – How is your business faring in Q1 2021 as we emerge from the COVID-19 crisis?

The Quarter 1 2021 BFPA and BFPDA surveys are underway and the signs are that things are recovering well, with anecdotal evidence suggesting that March 2021 has been a very good month for many companies. Please contact sarah@bfpa.co.uk if you would like to receive the questionnaire again.

CBI Industrial Trend Survey Summary

Included as part of the quarterly trend reports, BFPA subscribes to the CBI’s Industrial Trends Surveys – the Q1 2021 CBI ITS results for the first quarter make positive reading compared to this time last year. Below is the Executive Summary:

MANUFACTURING OPTIMISM GROWS AT ITS FASTEST PACE SINCE 1973

Sentiment in the manufacturing sector improved at its quickest rate since 1973, likely reflecting an improved outlook for demand conditions. Indeed, new orders last quarter grew at their fastest pace since April 2019, and output volumes are expected to grow rapidly next quarter after being flat in the three months to April. Investment intentions for both tangible and intangible capital expenditures saw noticeable improvements; in particular, anecdotes pointed to plant & machinery investment plans being brought forward to take advantage of the government’s recently announced super-deduction. The main factor that is tempering this broadly positive outlook is the rapid pace of costs growth, which continues to put sustained pressure on firms’ margins.
