What We Do
One of the BFPA’s key roles is to create, develop and maintain standards across the fluid power industry—at UK, European and international levels.
Our technical committees are central to this work, playing a vital role in:
- Developing and influencing industry standards

- Contributing to legislation and regulatory frameworks

Technical Committees: Expertise in Action
The BFPA operates several technical committees, each focused on specific areas of fluid power. These include cylinders, fluid seals & their housings; connectors & components; control components; product testing; contamination control; systems & accumulators; and hydraulic fluids.
These committees:
- Are made up of BFPA member experts
- Operate on a voluntary basis for the benefit of the entire industry
- Work collaboratively to share knowledge and expertise
- Help develop standards that influence engineering practices worldwide
By bringing together specialists from across the sector, the BFPA ensures that standards are shaped by real-world experience and technical insight.
A Voice in Global Standards
The BFPA plays a unique and influential role in standards development.
We:
- Hold the External Secretariat on behalf of the British Standards Institution (BSI)
- Contribute to around 500 fluid power standards
- Mirror our committee structure to international ISO fluid power committees
This means BFPA members are directly involved in shaping the standards that govern fluid power technology not just in the UK—but across the globe.
