Quarterly Trend Surveys – Q4/21 results

The Quarter 4 2021 BFPA and BFPDA survey results indicate it was a good one for hydraulic and pneumatic companies but distributors fared less well. Some important markets such as construction and food and drink performed strongly (despite December always being a weak month) but product / material costs continued to rise and the trend looks set to continue into 2022. The detailed reports have been sent to all responding companies.

BFPA follows the fluid power PPIs which reflect the increases reported by members over the past few years with Brexit and Covid (some 10% since December 2019). A chart here shows a summary of the increasing trends – please contact sarah@bfpa.co.uk if you want more details.

CBI Industrial Trend Survey Summary

BFPA subscribes to the CBI’s Industrial Trends Surveys for inclusion in the quarterly reports – below is the Executive Summary for the quarter to January 2022:

Activity in the manufacturing sector continues to be buoyed by supportive demand conditions, but concerns over labour shortages and cost/price pressures show few signs of easing. Total new orders grew strongly in the quarter to January, while output growth remained firm by historical standards (despite slowing from last quarter). New orders growth is expected to slow next quarter, but output growth is anticipated to pick up. Labour shortage concerns remain acute, and cost/price pressures continue to mount, but investment intentions strengthened despite a dip in business sentiment.
