ISO Meetings and BSI Forum

27 Nov 2019

Autumn is as usual a very busy time for BFPA’s Technical Department and Committees and 2019 was no different with two weeks of ISO meetings taking place in Milan in October, followed by the BSI Annual Standards Conference and Awards in November.

ISO Meetings

Week one of the ISO meetings were held between 7th to 11th October 2019, with the following working groups meeting during this period:

  • Cylinders – hydraulic mounting dimension
  • Flange ports and flange connectors
  • Hydraulic component and system sound measurement
  • Hydraulic quick-action couplings
  • Methods for connecting hose fittings and tubes to connectors
  • Port and connector stud ends
  • Pneumatic control products
  • Pneumatic tubing and connectors
  • Sealing devices

UK fluid power industry delegates attending meetings in the first week were:

Richard Driver, SMC Limited
Mark Fairhurst, BHR Group
Jerry Hughes, Jemlyn Limited and
Neil Robins, Holmbury Limited

Jerry Hughes was appointed as project leader to revise BS EN ISO 9974-1 Connections for general use and fluid power – Ports and stud ends with ISO 261 threads with elastomeric or metal-to-metal sealing – Part 1: Threaded ports.

Week two of the ISO meetings were held between 14th to 16th October 2019, with the following working groups meeting during this period:

  • Contamination control
  • Sampling, contamination analysis and reporting

UK fluid power industry delegates attending meetings in the second week were:

Yvonne Pearman, BFPA
Phil Keep, MP Filtri UK Limited
Andy Mustoe, MP Filtri UK Limited
Steve Radford, Hercules Hydraulics Limited
Mike Sherratt, Stanhope-Seta
Shaun Skilton, Parker Hannifin Limited

Yvonne Pearman of the BFPA is ISO Committee Manager to SC 6/WG 1, and as such attended the meetings and is now responsible for project managing the following work emanating from those meetings assisting worldwide experts such as Bruce Shane, Dr Barry Verdegan and Robert Fletcher, as well as UK technical committee members; Graeme Oakes and Steve Radford. The table below lists the nine standards under review – as an example of the huge amount of work involved, this means that Yvonne will need to coordinate with the relevant experts and prepare first drafts of all nine standards by the end of January 2020!

ISO/TR HFP – Data interpolation for particle count and filter test data New work item proposal
ISO/TR HFP – Background, impact and use of ISO 11171 on particle count and filter test data New work item proposal
ISO 4405 HFP – Fluid contamination – Determination of particulate contamination by the gravimetric methods
ISO 4406 HFP – Fluids – Methods for coding the level of contamination by solid particles
ISO 4407 HFP – Fluid contamination – Determination of particulate contamination by the counting method using an optical microscope
ISO 11171 HFP – Calibration of automatic particle counters for liquids
ISO 11943 HFP – Online automatic particle counting systems for liquids – Methods of calibration and validation
ISO 23309 Hydraulic fluid power systems – Assembled systems – Methods of cleaning lines by flushing
ISO 23871 HFP – Calibration of liquid automatic particle counters – Procedures used to certify the standard reference material SRM 2806d New work item proposal

BSI Forum

Yvonne Pearman and Jerry Hughes attended the BSI Standards Conference and Awards in London on 21 November on behalf of the BFPA and the Technical Committees. This years’ keynote speakers included high profile representatives from BSI (including David Bell, Director of Standards Policy and Dr Scott Steadman, Director of Standards), ISO and CEN/CENELEC. The key messages from the presentations and various panel discussions were:

  • The UK will continue to be involved in standards development post-Brexit through its membership of CEN/CENELEC
  • ISO and CEN/CENELEC are already having, and will have an increasingly important role to play in creating the standards which are need to address the key issues facing the world today in terms of global warming, sustainability (renewable energy, energy savings etc.)

BFPA committees currently involved in energy saving standard devlopment come under TC9 Systems and these are:

  • Fluid power – Application notes for the optimisation of the energy efficiency of hydraulic systems
  • Fluid power – PFP – Application notes for the improvement of the energy efficiency of pneumatic systems

If you would like any more information on any of these topics or are interested in joining a BFPA Technical Committee, please contact Yvonne Pearman yvonne@bfpa.co.uk
